  5.        The subject of gangs,  including symbols,  codes,  rules, and
  6.        the reality of gang  life  is  a very lengthy and complicated
  7.        subject  and  is  beyond  the  purpose  of   this   tutorial.
  8.      
  9.        What  follows  is  an  overview  that  attempts  to  describe
  10.        the gang problem in general.

  13.        The  number  of  street  gangs  and the incidence of violence
  14.        involving them is definately on the  rise.   If you live in a
  15.        large city, you know this already.   If you live in a smaller
  16.        or medium size city,  you have probably read about it, or are
  17.        beginning to experience the problem locally.
  18.      
  19.        Gangs formed out of the feeling for a need to  band  together
  20.        for   protection   against   other  groups  with  conflicting
  21.        interests or intentions.
  22.             
  23.        It is generally believed that gangs are made up of members of
  24.        society who fit a certain  mold.    People who join gangs are
  25.        usually "followers" who are not able to get  respect  without
  26.        their  "gang  identity".    They probably had no one in their
  27.        life to provide  a  positive  influence  on them.   They were
  28.        probably left home alone a lot due to  various circumstances.
  29.        They may have been involved in minor crimes and possibly drug
  30.        use.    They  lack any feeling of importance or power.   They
  31.        have no real self-esteem.   They  feel there is no excitement
  32.        in their lives.

  34.        The gang environment offers,  at least in the member's  mind,
  35.        all of these missing elements.   As a gang member,  they have
  36.        any  power  that  the  gang has.   They have an identity,  as
  37.        indicated by the "colors" they display.

  42.        Gang-related graffiti is one sure  sign of the presence of or
  43.        the impending emergence of gangs in your area.    Gangs  mark
  44.        their  turf  with gang symbols which can be found on building
  45.        walls,  sidewalks,  and on  just  about  anything else in the
  46.        neighborhood.   These gang symbols  and  other  markings  can
  47.        contain various complicated codes.
